Designing Family Friendly Homes – Flooring For Children’s Rooms

When designing spaces for children, it’s important to select flooring and other more permanent design aspects based on their ability to both stand up to the punishment that little ones throw at them and to grow with your kids as they get older.

Floors will need to be resistant to scratches, stains and general wear and tear, while also providing some level of protection against water damage. You’ll also want to select an option that has a good slip rating to ensure the safety of your little ones and the impact of joins (if floorboards are too far apart or become warped or separated) and other possible hazards must be considered when selecting a material.

Then you’ll need to think about a design that will age well as your children grow as well as your floor’s ability to stack up to changing family dynamics over time (say the addition of a pet or your child getting a bit older and running around in dirty sneakers from sport practice or their first pair of high heels).

Flooring For Children’s Bedrooms

When creating a room for little ones, you want a softer touch that adds warmth to the space and can help bring the room to life. You’ll also be looking to design a soothing environment that helps promote sleep.

For this reason, we suggest the installation of Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring in children’s bedrooms. Not only are these floorboards durable and waterproof, they’re also gentle underfoot and include noise reducing properties to help ensure maximum comfort within your home.

Flooring For Children’s Play Areas

Play areas take a lot of punishment. Toys are dragged along the floor without a care in the world, snacks and drinks are often spilled and don’t even get us started on the mess that results from playing with paint or glitter.

This means that you’re going to need a particularly durable flooring option in this area, preferably with stain resistance and definitely one that’s hard to scratch – especially if you have pets in the home.

For this reason, we suggest the installation of Laminate Flooring in children’s play areas. One of the toughest and most versatile options on the market, our Laminate offerings come in a range of design options and can stand the test of time. Laminate Floors are also the most pet friendly choice for your home which is important if Fido is going to be running around with the little ones.

Flooring For Children’s Bathrooms

The most important feature in bathroom flooring (apart from waterproof properties of course) is anti-slip technology. This is particularly vital in bathrooms mainly used by children as they’re in one of the biggest risk categories for slips and falls.

Older tiles can be particularly slippery but updating your entire bathroom with new ones is costly and time consuming. The good news is that waterproof floorboards such as Hybrid Flooring or Vinyl Plank Floors can be laid in a much more efficient (and generally far more cost effective) manner and they also allow for many creative design styles.

Both types of flooring feature a wonderful slip rating when supplied by Imagine Floors by Airstep so you don’t need to be so concerned about little ones taking a tumble and our versatile décor options (over fifty options between the two flooring styles) ensure that you can achieve your desired look and feel for the space.

Ensuring Children’s Flooring Ages Well

In terms of how well your children’s floors age, the two main factors will be how suited to your lifestyle they are and how well your floorboards are cared for. The selected design will closely follow these factors as the colour of the flooring can have a significant impact on the versatility of a space.

In order to get the most out of your floors, we suggest carefully selecting the type of flooring that you wish to install and then taking any required measures to ensure that they are cared for properly.

PRE-ADHERED UNDERLAY

Good acoustic properties are important both for the health of your family and regulatory obligations. Quieter environments are better for everyone, so our Hybrid floors come with a pre-adhered underlay that helps ensure their acoustic compliance.

WATERPROOF SURFACE

Floors that feature a waterproof surface are a great choice for those worried about spills or other accidents in their home. Our Luxury Vinyl Plank floorboards and Hybrid floors feature an inherently waterproof surface thanks to their water-resistant construction, while our Laminate floors enjoy a waterproof surface thanks to their aluminium oxide wear layer.

In some cases – like with our Luxury Vinyl Plank floors and Hybrid flooring – a waterproof surface also means that floorboards are suitable for installation in wet areas such as bathrooms (excluding shower bases) and laundries. This allows for the creation of a seamless design throughout your entire home – a great perk for those who want consistency in their style.

CLASS RATING 23

Hard floors are assigned a Class Rating based on their suitability for different situations.

When you see Class Rating 23 assigned to a floor, this means that it is suitable for installation in even the highest traffic areas of your home.

Class Rating 23 is the highest residential rating achievable and is applicable to most Imagine Floors by Airstep flooring collections.
